THE SHELTER

Opened: November 30.

What: Former flashy Blue Ice Club has gone back to its bomb shelter roots. The local promoters who have been touring back and forth between 4Live and Logo seem to have adopted it as their new permament home.

Look: Raw. Gone is the candy decor of Blue Ice, and in comes a black, low-ceilinged, proper club. They’ve stripped it back to raw concrete, moved (and expanded) the DJ booth to the other side, and yanked out the couches to make for a bigger dancefloor.

Music: Their strong suit. The Uprooted Sunshine guys doing reggae; The Lab crew doing a weekly Friday night of hip hop (atonement for the club’s musical past); Void and its purist techno; Antidote and it’s anti-purist mishmash; and a healthy schedule of one offs that will cover every other genre.

People: Everyone you ever saw at 4Live or Logo is here. You might not be able to see them through the ink black fog and heavy cigarette smoke, but they’re here.

Price: Another bonus. Cocktails and beers are both had for around ¥20.
