Whirl
The dance of the Sufi whirling dervishes comes to Shanghai after touring Lebanon, Iran and Jordan. The performance is directed and performed by Boukje Schweigman at the Dutch Culture Centre, and audience members will wear grey robes. Incense will swirl in the air, and the beat will be played on drums. Stick around after the show for a talk on theater management. 50 RMB. Jul 29th – 31st. Anita Michaels Performs T.S. Eliot and Tennessee WilliamsPerformance poet Anita Michaels has taken her one-woman show through Europe and the USA, and comes to city where she grew up to perform at the Glamour Bar. She will read T. S. Eliot’s poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” scenes from Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire”, and her own musings on China. 65 RMB, including a drink. La Bohème
One of the most famous and popular operas in the world, Puccini’s tale of bohemian angst and untimely death among poets and writers is brought to Shanghai by the Teatro Regio Torino, where the opera was originally premiered. The orchestra will be conducted by Giananchea Noseda, and the show is directed by Vittorio Borrelli. 150 – 800 RMB. Aug 4th and 6th @ 7.30pm. Gold Coast Daily Show
If you’ve got friends or family visiting, and want to show them what your adopted homeland has to offer when it comes to musical theater, take them to Gold Coast. We’re not sure why it’s named after a stretch of Australian beach, but it’s a lot of fun. It’s mostly in Mandarin and Shanghainese, but there are some sections in English. 40-160 RMB. 8:30pm. If you’ve ever wanted to find out about Chinese traditional costumes, this is your chance.
